Alex Fernandez Fox is an independent Cuban-American artist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer and songwriter. His music resists easy categorization, drawing freely from traditional Cuban music, American folk and jazz, and other influences that find a place in his English and Spanish language compositions. Alex plays guitars, acoustic and electric bass and piano and performs primarily on the tres, a Cuban cousin of the Spanish guitar.
As a musician and musical director he has been part of ensembles in both Latin and non-Latin genres and has performed at festivals and local music venues throughout North America and in Europe. He plays extensively in the New York metro area and has performed at permanent venues such as Lincoln Center, Town Hall, SOB's, Elebash Recital Hall, Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, and Highline Ballroom as well as local festivals including Central Park Summerstage, Sounds On The Hudson, Howl! and River to River. Alex has appeared on Univision's "Despierta America", Telemundo's "De Mañanita" and NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion."
Alex works as a band leader, session musician and guitar instructor. He holds degrees from Duke University, where he played piano in the Duke Jazz Ensemble, and from Georgetown University. He studied classical guitar at the Mannes College of Music and guitar and percussion at the National Arts School in Havana, Cuba.
